Rosendahl Encourages Early Participation in LGBT Heritage Month Event

UPDATE: Deadlines extended!

The City’s  Heritage Month celebration for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) community is still a month away, but Councilmember Bill Rosendahl wants you to get involved  before the kick-off event in late May.

Whether you’re a student, an artist, or a business owner, the LGBT community in the Southland can get involved right now.  Here are some ways you can participate in planning the event:

Enter the Youth Creative Writing and Video Contest. Each year, the Heritage Month planning committee collects creative writing submissions and video entries from students in grades 6-12. The contest is a fantastic opportunity for students to win cash prizes for their work. More information can be found on the contest flyer. The deadline to enter is Friday, April 26.

Submit an event for the LGBT Heritage Month Calendar and Cultural Guide. This year’s festivities — and those from around the City — will be featured in a special LGBT Heritage Month Calendar and Cultural Guide. The program will showcase artists, events, exhibitions, lectures, festivals and cultural programs celebrating LGBT culture. The Calendar and Guide is a wonderful opportunity for Angelenos to appreciate and celebrate LGBT culture and traditions. The deadline for artwork and event submissions is also  Friday, April 26, 2013 Friday, May 3.  Email submissions to Dennis Gleason at dennis.gleason@lacity.org or fax 213-626-5431

Submit work by LGBT artists in Los Angeles – a great way to celebrate arts and culture in the City of Angels. The Heritage Month committee is also looking for artwork submissions which should be sent via email and in the form of a  high resolution image and include photo credit information, Direct all content to Martica Caraballo Stork at marta.stork@lacity.org by May 3.

Rosendahl is partnering with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Department of Cultural Affairs to celebrate the third annual LGBT Heritage Month event. The official kick off is May 30 at City Hall, followed by a council presentation the next day (May 31 ) in the John Ferraro Council Chamber.
