The Venice community is expected to turn out on Saturday afternoon for a rally to save the historic Venice Post Office.
The United States Postal Service announced plans last year to close the post office and move operations to a new location. Venetians fear this could pave the way for a new owner to possibly demolish the historic building.
An online petition to save the post office can be found here. Councilman Bill Rosendahl is expected to speak at the event.
Yo! Venice! provides some perspective as to why this structure is important to the history of Venice and notes the famous mural inside the building:
Noted artist Edward Biberman’s “Story of Venice” mural inside the lobby is one of only two of his murals that remain; the other is in the lobby of the downtown Los Angeles U.S. Courthouse, declared an historic building in 2006.
The rally is being held on Saturday, February 18, 2-4 p.m., at 1601 Main Street in Venice.
